The first shooter game dedicated to the events of WW II is undoubtedly Medal of Honor: Allied Assault. About three years ago, this exciting and spectacular shooter amazed us with its gameplay. The main advantage of the game was the combination of continuous and exciting action, a special atmosphere, as well as spectacular battles and battles. The subsequent series of imitating clone games failed to repeat the success of MoHAA, the only successful example being Call of Duty, which was essentially a copy of that "golden" gameplay. As the name suggests, Pacific Assault takes us to the events in the Pacific Ocean, where the war between the United States and Japan broke out.
MoHPA offers a solidly crafted single-player campaign of 25 missions, which at the normal difficulty level will take you about 10 hours to complete. """While "Allied Assault" drew inspiration from Spielberg's "Saving Private Ryan," the sequel repeats the most spectacular moments of "Pearl Harbor" and restores the action of the film "The Thin Red Line." You play as Marine Tommy Conlin, who goes through the war with his squad. In the training camp, you will be asked to try different types of weapons and learn how to give simple commands. Do not think that the tactical part of the game is well developed, basically you will have to save your ass from hordes of poorly armed and stupid Japanese, i.e. the sequel is not particularly developed in this part. Don't think that the puny Japanese won't be able to disturb you, even at the average difficulty level, their accuracy, perseverance, and just the ability to attack in huge numbers will sometimes terrify you. Sometimes it's because everyone knows quicksave and quickload. By the end of the game, these keys should become your favorites.
The campaign takes place over several years and in different locations, so get ready for different tasks, different weapons and, of course, different gameplay. Why was it worth celebrating? Yes, because the boring gameplay only helps due to the ingenuity of the developers, and when fully immersed in the atmosphere of fighting in the jungle, the game becomes really wonderful. I doubt that this feeling can come to you after one or two missions, you need to play longer to appreciate all the advantages and disadvantages of Pacific Assault. The only thing that stands out from the general level is the Pearl Harbor mission, where the level of special effects and action exceeds all expectations. Unfortunately, this mission is the fastest, followed by routine battles in places like Guadalcanal, Makin Atoll, Tarawa, and others. The secretive and inconspicuous Japanese, along with your sometimes obligatory secretive way of acting, are not at all what they were in the original. If you want to survive, it's better not to go ahead, at least stealth and accuracy will allow you to save more health.
Unfortunately, the effect of PA is negated if you have played all the recently released Vietnamese shooters. Then wandering through the jungle in search of countless, secretive, narrow-eyed enemies is definitely enough for you. And if not, then you will still have a feeling of deja vu, only the good old Thompson will remind you of WWII. Among the disadvantages, one can find, again, some conditionality of events. For example, instead of an endless jungle, there is only an illusion in the game, since the paths are completely linear. Also, the new option of wounds and the subsequent summoning of a medic finishes off with its monotony. Of course, it's a little realistic when the medic is busy with another member of your squad or is just far away and therefore cannot "fix" you. But when a medic heals you in the midst of a lively firefight, it looks strange. Such are the double standards. Of course, you can only be treated a limited number of times, so once again it's better not to come under fire and use quicksave more often. And if you're down, sometimes you can't even wait for the doctor.
If we talk about your squad, sometimes it seems that the entire tactical part is just a fiction. Of course, these guys can stand up for themselves, but all the main actions fall on Tommy Conlin. In short, without you, these guys are afraid to move forward and can't act properly at all. The good thing is that they are inherently immortal. You can only lose each of them for a while until the medic heals them again.
In general, the campaign in the game is quite difficult, especially in the last missions, where the main character is often killed by enemies with machine guns, stationary guns in shelters and fighter jets that need to be shot down. At high difficulty levels, it's generally better not to mess with the "realistic" ones, for example, all the indicators on the screen (life, number of rounds, sight) are removed. AI is smarter now and can entertain you with a shootout without using annoying scripts. One of the tricks is the frequent use of close combat, when there is nothing left but to hit your enemy with the butt. In my memory, this is the first time it has been used so often. In addition, sometimes there really aren't enough bullets, so you have to use less functional Japanese weapons.
Multiplayer is represented by three types: free-for-all, team deathmatch and invader. Of interest is only the latter, in which one of the opposition teams must complete certain tasks, such as destroying stationary guns, obtaining secret documents, or giving orders over the radio. Naturally, another team will try to prevent the task from being completed. Pacific Assault has an easy step-by-step installation of options for your game, the number of players is limited to 32.
As a result, it can be noted that the game has both negative and positive aspects. Although it requires a fairly powerful system and at the same time has a long load of levels, although the graphical part does not meet such requirements. Sometimes there are very annoying bugs with scripts, including the strange behavior of your enemies and allies. But at the same time, you can list a lot of advantages. All the changes in the gameplay and graphics of the game clearly deserve the title of a sequel. On a powerful computer, modern DirectX 9 effects will not leave you indifferent, among the most pleasant moments: vision effects during concussion or shooting, animation of models, realization of jungle, water, as well as a physical model. Of course, there is nothing very outstanding here, but all together it makes you completely forget that the engine grew out of Quake 3. As in any other well-sponsored blockbuster, MoHPA has excellent sound and equally good orchestral music. High-quality dialogues, along with the plot and video inserts, make up the lion's share of the atmosphere. Pacific Assault is a good choice, and if it weren't for the high–profile premieres close to the release date, the game would have received more attention.
