about Ghana Premier League

Football in Ghana dates back to the early 18th Century and but the first official Ghanaian soccer club which was called Cape Coast Excelsior was founded in 1903 and the first formal competition was launched in 1920, so Ghana has quite a rich soccer history. Ghana has produced some exciting national team squads and it is the only African country to make it to the Quarter Finals of the World Cup where they nearly qualified for the Semi Finals had it not been of the infamous incident involving Luis Suarez. The reason why Ghana performs so well in various tournaments is because the country is blessed with so much talent and the host of the Ghanaian players are plying their trade in Europe, It is also important not to undermine the role of the Ghana Premier League in the development of soccer in Ghana because this is the platform where players showcase what they can do.

What is the Ghana Premier League?

The Ghana Premier League is revered in Africa and from the period between 2001-2010, this popular league was ranked as the 11th best league in Africa and this is by no means an easy feat, but it is a true testament of how well the league has been run.

The Ghana Premier League has also made a mark at the continental stage because Asante Kotoko and Hearts of Oak have won a CAF Champions League title before. What makes the Ghana League less competitive in the CAF Champions League as compared to other leagues like the Egyptian league is because they export most if not all of their talented footballers to Europe because the clubs do not have the funds to convince the players to stay, but most Egyptian players prefer to play in Egypt because they are offered huge amounts of money, a good example is Mohamed Aboutrika, who spent his entire career at Al Ahly when he ould have easily moved to Europe.
