The National Lottery Association was established in the year 1958 as the Department of National Lotteries and its mandate then was to organize raffles for the public to have fun and win prizes. The Lotto and Betting Act 94 was then passed into law to start a lottery in Ghana in 1960, the reason being that the government realised that they can generate a revenue through lottery.
Over the past fifty years, the NLA has evolved from its earlier incarnation as a Civil Service Institution known as the Department of National Lotteries (DNL), it has been transformed into an autonomous Public Service Institution, with a legal monopoly on the organization of lotteries in Ghana, and one which is of the most important contributors to both Government revenues and employment generation.
A significant change happened in 2006 after the passing of an act of parliament, the National Lotto Act 722, and this is when the (NLA) National Lottery Authority was established with the mandate to regulate, supervise, conduct, manage and provide assistance to issues related to National Lotto in the great nation of Ghana.
Some of the duties of the the National Lottery Authority include organizing raffles for the nation. The board of the NLA oversees the activities of the organization, headed by the chairperson, one representative of the Ministry of Interior, one representative of the Ministry of Finance, another representative of the Attorney General’s Department, two Government appointees, and the Director General.
The National Lottery Association offer a number of draw based games to players in Ghana and the objectives is to offer players an opportunity to win life-changing amounts and also to raise funds which will be used to provide care and protection for the physically and mentally challenged, the needy, the aged, orphans as well as destitute children in the country, the revenue is also and also used for other purposes at the discretion of the nation. The association has a total of 8,600 points of sale which are spread all over Ghana.
