Ghana’s status as one of the leading African countries in gaming and sports betting continues to grow with each passing day. While lotteries and sports betting are allowed in the country, the government is very strict on regulation.
The National Lottery Authority (NLA) is the designated body that oversees the regulation of all lotteries in the country and is the only body tasked with organising raffles for the public.
The NLA has been operating since 1958 but the Lotto and Betting Act 94 was officially passed into law to start a lottery in Ghana in 1960. Lottery has since become key to revenue generation by the government, with the NLA gaining autonomy following the passing of an Act of parliament, the National Lotto Act 722, in 2006.
Currently, there are many lotteries that take place in Ghana on a daily basis, some of which are legit and others illegal.
This article is aimed at revealing the legitimate lotteries in Ghana, as well as how and when they take place.
To begin with, the NLA has its own lotteries. In fact, the NLA’s lotteries run from Monday to Saturday. Below are all the lottery options from the NLA:
This lottery ushers players into a fresh week. It’s run on 5/90 fixed-odds game, and involves the selection of at least 1 and at most 5 out of 90 numbers at a play. Monday Special can be played on all NLA point of Sale machines across the country or via the shortcode *890# on all networks, after which a draw is held to select the five winning numbers.
This lottery also takes place every Tuesday and is also a 5/90 fixed odd Game which involves the selection of a maximum of 5 out of 90 numbers at a play. It can be played on all NLA point of Sale machines across the country or via the shortcode *890# on all networks.
As the name suggests, the NLA’s Midweek lottery takes place every Wednesday and is also a 5/90 fixed odds Game. It is currently the second most popular NLA game and is widely patronised by many Ghanaians. One can play by selecting a maximum of 5 out of 90 numbers. Draws are then held at 6:30pm to randomly select 5 winning numbers.
This also involved the selection of at least 1 and at most 5 out of 90 numbers and takes place on Thursday’s only. One can play on all NLA point of Sale machines across the country or via the shortcode *890# on all networks.
The Friday Bonanza lottery is aimed at preparing players for the NLA’s flagship lottery on Saturday. Similar to the others, one can play by selecting any number from 1-90 with a maximum of 5 numbers.
National Weekly Lotto
The National Weekly Lotto is the flagship product of the NLA and has been running for over 50 years. It’s also a 5/90 Game which involves the selection of at least 1 and at most 5 number(s) from 1-90 numbers at a play.
The Veterans Administration Ghana (VAG) was launched in July 2019 for veterans but has quickly become a national favourite for oldies. Tailor-made for veterans, the product is a 5/90 fixed odds game as players are required to select 5 out of 90 numbers to stand a chance of winning.
This lottery takes place daily (Monday –Saturday) and is a fixed Odds Game. With as little as 1 cedi, one can stand a chance of winning by selecting a maximum of 6 out of 55 numbers at a play. The Super 6 game has 13 different winning schemes and a limitless Jackpot with a guaranteed amount of 100,000.
This is a mobile-phone based game that requires players to select 3 lucky numbers by dialing *987#. Starting from 2 cedis, one can select any 3 lucky numbers, between 0 to 9, and wait for the 10-minute draw to win up to 300 times their stake.
